Shared folders can be seen, not opened

Hello Group,
This is embarrassing because I had a similar problem about two years
ago and spent many days in this group soaking up advice from Chuck and
others, who were very patient with me. Here's the message id for that
thread:
<[email protected]>
That issue was "one-way" sharing issues. Now it's both ways.

I have a similar problem with a new (albeit similar) system: Windows
XP Pro SP3 on desktop and laptop, connected through a linksys router.
Same log on ID, identical passwords. The computers ping each other
fine, by ip address or by computer name. Shared files are seen from
each computer but can't be opened by either computer. No error
message. Simple file sharing and all services required are enabled.
Guest account is enabled. Firewalls don't appear to be an issue. I've
reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers several times, looking for another
"hidden firewall", but there doesn't appear to be one in this version.

I'll post browstat and ipconfig /all as a starter in my help request.

I appreciate any advice. Having the problem with neither computer
being able to share is worse than last time. Now I have to email
myself the data from the laptop to be able to include it in this post.

Many thanks.

If you can produce a directory-listing of the remote share, then there cannot
be much wrong with the network itself. I'm wondering if there is a filesystem
(NTFS) permissions issue. Bear in mind that though Simple Sharing hides the
filesystem-permissions (security) tab, the permissions are still very much
active.

Thanks for the suggestion. That sounds reasonable to me. What should I
do to verify or change this? Should I try disabling simple file
sharing and use advanced file sharing?
I appreciate your input.

Yes. if you turn simple sharing off you will see the Security tab on file
right-click properties.

Once the problem is corrected you can re-enable simple sharing,
Alternatively just go to the usermanager (run compmgmt.msc) and enable the
guest account, which has much the same effect, but without hiding the security
tab. You can set a password on the guest account, which will then be the
password for file-sharing

Thanks Anteaus,
I'll work on it. I think the guest account was already enabled on both
computers. But I did it again in compmgmt.msc and also with
command line
net user guest /active:yes

I think I'd like to undo all the sharing and permission changes I've
made and start from scratch. Is this possible? (Without re-installing
Windows or doing a major repair, of course.)

I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions.
