In my attempt to upgrade from Win95 to XP, I receive the
following error message:

"SEtup cannmot upgrade this computer to Windows XP. The
Upgrade option is not available."

What's this about? Help, Im at my wits end.....

It says right on the box that you can only upgrade 98 or newer to XP.

Can the upgrade version be used for an install from a
clean hard drive, or is the Professional version required?
Ive tried the Upgrade version from a clean install and
that has not worked either.

Mike
The upgrade can normally be used to do a clean install, but
somewhere along the line you'll need to show it the
qualifying media, such as a win98 or WinME CDROM.

If it is not too much hassle, just borrow the "qualifying media" (older
Windows disk) from an acquaintance. You only need it for a few seconds
during the installation process..

You can't upgrade 95 to XP, but you can do a clean install of XP with the
upgrade version, using your 95 CD as a qualifying product. You boot from the
XP CD, and insert the 95 CD when asked. However, as Malke points out, you
won't be happy with the performance on this old system, as well as having
many hardware/software compatibility issues.

XP will not upgrade Win95. Only Win98 or later. You can use a Win95 CD
as evidence of entitlement when doing a clean install, but that's all.

In any case it is very doubtful if a machine with Win95 will have
anywhere near an adequate hardware level for XP

A win95 CD will serve as qualifying media. It is just that you cannot
do an inplace upgrade
