Yes, but clean install the XP Upgrade and slip in the 95 CD when it asks
for it during the XP install.

No. Although Windows 95 is strangely accepted if you perform a clean
install with an Upgrade type of Windows XP CD - you cannot perform an
in-place upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows XP.

To be honest - if you have a machine running Windows 95 - you would be
better off recycling it, giving it to the kids, giving it to charity -
anything but attempting to continue using it and especially not trying to
upgrade what is most likely insufficient hardware to Windows XP.

You can not directly upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows XP. However
you can do a clean installation with the Windows Upgrade CD, by
inserting a previous qualifying version's CD when XP's setup program
prompts you for it (as proof of ownership). Even though you can't
upgrade from Windows 95, in this scenario, the Windows 95 CD *is*
accepted as a previous qualifying version.

No. Besides, a PC old enough to be running Win956 is very unlikely to
be able to meet WinXp's much more stringent hardware requirements.

That's incorrect. Win98 is the earliest OS that you can upgrade from the
desktop, but the Win95 cd is acceptible during the shiny media check when
using an XP Upgrade Edition clean install.

You can use your Win95 cd to qualify for the XP Upgrade Edition, but you
cannot upgrade Win95 to XP by running the XP Setup from the Win95 desktop.
You have to do a clean install of XP and that means that will need to
reinstall your apps.

Awesome! thanks for the replies chaps. Well I have just bought a laptop that
had/is based on Windows 95. The laptop has a RS 232 9 pin port specifically
for car management, megajolt. When I switch the laptop on,this screen comes on
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/sierra3dr/Laptop-1.jpg After that the
usual Windows XP starting up screens come on,then switches off and repeats
the above. I have gone into F8 and chosen "disable automatic restart on
system failure" and I get STOP: c000021a (Fatal System Error)
The Windows Logon Process System process terminated unexpectedly with a
status of 0xc0000005 (0x0000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down
I've no idea what the previous owner has done.
Thanks all!

Or perhaps just upgrade to Win98SE, and stop there (with a machine of that
old vintage).

The photo was a little blurred but it looks like an old Dell Latitude..
I have a few of them and they will definately not run XP.

You may want to pick up a win95 or a win98 cd on ebay (or wherever)
then format the drive and perform a fresh install.

If you have 32 megs of RAM or more, win98 is possible...(though 64 would be
advised)
but if you have only 16 megs of ram or less, you will have to stick with
win98

You may need to get a few drivers...but IIRC Dell still has them available

If the hardware is that old, certainly it nowhere near powerful enough
to run Windows XP. But it's also possible that the machine has been
upgraded since then, perhaps even more than once. Or that Paul plans
on upgrading the hardware. Or even that he has moved his old Windows
95 from the original machine to a more modern one.

So let me say to Paul, much the same thing you said, but a little more
explicitly: as an absolute minimum, you need a computer of around
400MHz, 256MB of RAM, and a hard drive of 10GB. More of each of those
would almost certainly be considerably better. Unless you have, or are
willing to upgrade at least to those specs, don't even consider
running Windows XP.

And finally, if you have not yet upgraded, but are thinking of doing
so, you should investigate the alternative of just buying a whole new
computer. In many cases, it's a cheaper and better alternative.

Yep. But if your Win95 PC is as old as that OS, then you should
probably retire it and use it as a door stop, and get something newer.

WinXP runs fine om my Dell Latitude CPxJ700GT!
I had Win2000Pro on it before, and it ran fine as well.

Maybe different Latitude Models can/cannot run XP?

Right fellas,I do apologise, but it seems to work now. I got a bit fed up
with it and just quickly pressed every key with my four fingers (didn't use
my thumbs GRIN) and for some reason it works. It's a Dell lattitude CP
M233ST. It's doing my head in why it wouldn't work.
On a different note,I tried to post a reply earlier, but this message board
wouldn't respond,until I took off the num lock,bizarre.
Thanks all, ever so much for your replies
