XP can not recover- mup.sys

Equipment:

My daughter's Dell 4500s is running "Windows XP Home" version with the
SP_2 update installed successfully, for over 3 months.

Pentium CPU 1.8 hrtz clock , 256 SD Ram (1 stick). All of it's Hardware
& it's Software (package) is stock from Original Dell purchase 2 or 3
years ago.

Recently, my daughter picked-up a lot of spy/ad malware & few trojans.
I recently installed & ran the latest versions of freeware anti-spyware
programs on it in (this order).
A_2 squared,
Adaware Personal,
SpyBlaster,
&
Spybot S & D,
all programs with respective updates.

The machine cleaned up nicely but the last program (Spybot S & D) said
it had to clean the rest of the mess before Windows started & required a
reboot to complete the cleaning process. When i or it tried to reboot,
it stopped booting at the mup.sys post.
It booted like normal until the background screen image loaded but no
desktop icons or start toolbar menu appeared.
The mouse works fine & the pointer is there too. Nothing happens on
mouse's right click though.

It will not boot into safe mode, except in "safe mode with command
prompt" option.
If i do a Ctlr-Alt_Del key thing, i can access the Task Manager.
Many programs can be run under "New Tasks". However "explorer.exe"
I can get AOL 7.0 to load& access AOL's email program & retrieve new
email (but not Messenger's Buddy list) but can not go to the internet,
itself, though. Go figure? IE 6.0 will not go to websites either.

Task Manager shows 19 processes running but also shows that the CPU
idles at 99%.

I have tried all the tricks using MSCONFIG-nothing.
I did a Recovery Console attempt-no backups to access.
Tried every option from the F8 screen.

Use the Dell's XP Recovery disc & did a boot from CD re-install Repair.
Still stopped the boot at mup.sys.
BTW-i never get error messages.

Did command prompt fixboot, chkdsk, (did not do fixmbr cause people say
it will screw up your boot completely).

Did a flash_bios to A03 Bios version (latest one offered). Nothing

Did a CMOS reset (pulled the battery) NOTHING.
Re-ran all the anti-spyware programs nothing, clean.

Should i get & use CWShredder & "Hijack This" programs?

Do i need to try to rebuild my registry manually through safe mode's
command prompt program?

I refuse to believe that will all the XP experts out there that this
problem can NOT be fixed without doing a "CLEAN Install" of XP.

From all i have read & tried, someone at microsoft needs to find a fix
for this because it is a common NO FIX complaint.

Just google "mup.sys XP boot" & read all the issues related to it. Is it
hardware, software, SP-2, Viruses, etc.

PLEASE Help!!

Viruses are designed to destroy your system. You can
remove the virus files, but often you cannot undo the
damage already caused by the viruses. That is why a
"clean install" is often the only solution for a virus
infested computer.

Here's what you can do to enhance the security on your PC
