XP Boot hangs - no error msg

When I boot XP it hangs on the Blue screen after the
balck XP logo screen. The hard drive continues to be
accessed but it not progress with booting up. This is not
a virus issue. I believe the OS was corrupted by a disk
transfer utility. The disk it completely accessible when
installed in another machine as a slave and the boot
disk. I need to be able to restore the ability to boot up
with the current user's settings, applications and
desktop, which are all still on the hard drive. I have
tried the Disaster Recovery Console but FIXBOOT and
FIXMBR have no effect. I can install a second Windows
installation on the hard drive and it will boot into
that, but all the application links are lost and they
won't run. Any ideas on how to complete the boot process,
and restore the user's settings?

Sounds like the same problem I am having. My laptop boots
up and shows the default wallpaper, then freezes just
before showing the user accounts. If anyone can help X(
