For several years I have had auto updates set to "notify me but don't
auto download or install"

no-one besides myself has access to the computer, but last week I
found the setting were changed to "Automatic" I changed it back to
"notify me"

I did a through scan with
Avast (free)
AVG anti-rootkit
a-squared free
SuperAntispyware
plus I have installed and updated Spybot and Spyware blaster.

This morning once again the settings had been changed to "Automatic"
this time I put the settings to "off"

I ran a hijackthis scan and it checks out clean, however it is my
understanding that some of the newer bad stuff can hide from
highjackthis?

I'm away from home for a few days and using a hotel keyboard at the
present.
if anyone had any good ideas I'd sure like to hear them

Thanks

The issue of Windows Secrets (Oct 24) explains what is going on.

Installing Windows Live OneCare, Microsoft's downloadable security
suite, changes the settings of Automatic Updates without notifying
users or honoring their update preferences.

I did install the free trial of this crapola program from Microsoft,
after just a few days I came to the conclusion that it was worthless
and uninstalled it, seems the damage was already done and uninstalling
doesn't reverse the changes

Luckly I make a weekly mirror copy of my c-drive

I suspect that a lot of people are going to discover they have been
shafted again by Microsoft
