auto definitions not working

I've not had defender installed very long. It's set to do an auto scan every
day at midday, & I've ticked the "check for updates automatically before
scan" The first time it did an auto scan, it didn't update. The second time,
it did. Each Subsequent time since, it didn't. It'll allow me to do a manual
update. Why won't it do it automatically. I'm using xp, sp3.

Hello Madmax,

You can repair Windows Defender using Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel.

Click Windows Defender and click Change.

Click Next, and then click Updªte.

Go ahead and download\update from here

<http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal>

and in the right column, download the 32-bit definitions.

Users who normally select advanced Spynet membership should be aware that
the install process will set you back to basic membership, so it's a good
idea to revisit both the Spynet membership area of Tools, and the Options
area--to see what's different, and check that your old choices have been
preserved.

Madmax,

Please note that MS only pushes out updates to Defender about twice a week,
usually on Tue and Thurs afternoon PST [though they sometimes vary, like the
one was pushed today] these are the updates that "Check for Updates" and
AU/MU look for. So there will Not be a new update everyday it checks.

The updates available at the Security Center are updated more often, but are
never automatically downloaded. They can only be download Manually by going
to that site and clicking on the link there.

?:)
