Automatic Scanning Inop

Windows Defender will not auto scan at any designated scan dates and times.
Manul scanning works ok. I have Windows Defender set to scan daily but it
will not. Every three days I get a Defender alert message: "You haven't
scanned your computer in three days - We recommend that you schedule Windows
Defender to scan your computer each day."

Automatic daily scan works ok on a Windows 2000 Professional computer but
does not work on my Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2 computer. Tried
uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Defender on the XP Edition but auto
scan still will not run.

Scheduled tasks are enabled and Windows Defender service is running on both
computers.

Hello Bilbun,

Try to repair Windows Defender using Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel. Click WD and click Change. Click Next, and then click Updªte.

Just go to Scan menu, select Custom scan, select some folders and do
scanning on them. The error should disappear (also the WD icon from the tray)

I hope this post is helpful.
Let us know how it works ºut.

Engel,

I have done as you recommended but automatic scan still does not work. I
have uninstalled and installed Windows Defender twice and attempted the
change you suggested.

Windows Defender has always scanned manually but never automatically. I
have never received an error (except when I attempt to scan using the scan
button on the Windows Defender window) - it just doesn't scan automatically.
The scan information at the bottom of the window displays only the manual
scan dates and times.

It still doesn't work automatically.

bilbun,

I also have been unable to schedule WD scans using the Task Scheduler in
Control Panel. The tasks scheduler wakes the computer up from standby and
starts the WD program but there is not a command to start the scheduler
inside WD so no scan occurs. What I have done to get around glitch in WD is
to not use Schedule Tasks. I set the scheduled task inside of WD to scan
following a Norton Anti-Virus scan. The Norton Anti-Virus scan wakes the
computer up from stand by mode and runs its scan ok. I increased the time
before the computer returns to stand by in Power Options to allow enough time
for the the WD scan to start and it works just perfectly. This will work for
me until Microsoft comes up with the right command line for Sceduled Tasks to
perform the scan. Hope it works for you.

pelicanhill,

I had tried to schedule WD scans using Task Scheduler, also. It didn't work
there, either. However, I haven't tried to run the scans using just WD. All
the comments in these discussions have stated that Task Scheduler must be
enabled in order for WD to work. I will disable the Task Scheduler to see if
the WD automatic scans will run.

It didn't help to disable Task Scheduler. WD auto scan simply does not work
on my computer with the Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2 OS. It does work on
another computer with the Windows 2000 Professional OS.

Time to get rid of Windows Defender.

Hi bilbun,
I also have XP Home with SP2. You may want to verify the following. In WD,
tools/general settings/schedule the scan settings are checked and scroll to
the botton of the page and check both boxes under admin options. The computer
must be on and not in standby mode to auto scan. good luck!

Everything is set exactly the same as the computer with the Windows 2000
Professional OS but will not auto scan on the computer with Windows XP SP2
OS. The admin boxes are checked. I never run my computers in standby mode,
they are always on during the scan times I've designated WD to run. Looks
like this is a lost cause.

If you drop to a command prompt and do

sc queryex schedule <enter>

is it running?

If not, what happens if you do

net start schedule <enter>

I am having the same problem with the scheduler.
I seem to be unable to start the scheduled tasks. When I try to start using
scheduled tasks i get the message "Unable to start the service".

I have tried using the command prompt as outlined below, but i get the
message "system error 1058 has occurred The service cannot be started,
either because it is disabled or because it has no enable devices assoicated
with it"

how do I get this to work??????
