XP assigning random drive letters

SP2 messed up my system & had to be uninstalled, since then I am getting
random drive letters.
I set the drive letters manually reboot all becomes normal, but the next few
reboots again its reset & show me random drive letter.

What's gone wrong with XP, how to stop this behaviour.

First, *How* did SP2 "mess up your system"? Did you prepare properly before
installing it?
Second, Random drive letters where and for what?!

--------------------------------------------------
After SP2 my network card under Device Manager & network connections
disappeared, though the connection remained working, I decided to uninstall
SP2.
To my surprise it gave me problems not letting me uninstall...........I
booted to safe mode & let the uninstall happen. It took over 3 hrs to
complete the uninstall.

Well finally my network was working & all visible. Since then on every
reboot my hard drive partition E / F gets exchanged with my CD /DVD drives G
/ H. I manually reassign them & then reboot it again does that exchange of
drive letters.

XP pro is not able to remember the drive letters.
