Reset assigned drive letters to USB drives

I have been assigning drive letters manually to my USB flash keys/card
readers. I would now like to reset this back XP's normal mode where XP will
assign the letter to "first come" basis. Is there some easy way, besides
removing the "hardware" configuration (drive, volume and USB device) from
Device Manager?

Is the a better method of drive letter assignment for XP?

Launch regedit, navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
and delete all values that look like \DosDevices\F:, except those
pertaining to your hard disk partitions.
