problem re-assigning drive letter

Tom

Hi,

I try to re-assign my DVD drive letter from D: to Z:
So, I open Disk Management and change the DVD to Z: without any problem.
The DVD is now Z:
But, when I reboot the computer, Vista reset the DVD back to D:
So, I open Regedit to change the key directly. I reboot the computer and
the DVD is Z:
But again, when I reboot the computer another time, the DVD is back to D:

Any idea what is going on?

Thanks!

Some time ago this was a common problem caused
by ZoneAlarm 6.5. If you don't have ZoneAlarm
the another great software screws up somthing.

Start -> Run
msconfig
on tab "Services" check "Hide All Microsoft Service"
Now deactivate 50 percent of the remaing services
Set letter Z, reboot
If the letter changes to D again, try again with
the other 50 percent deactivated and so on until
you find the culprit.
Please let us know which great product it is...

This sounds like a great idea. Will do. Thanks!
I do not have ZoneAlarm. I am running McAfee.
I also notice something strange. Sometimes if I keep rebooting the computer
many times, the drive will stay as Z:
Sometimes if I reboot the computer just once, the drive will be back to D:

This is crazy!

Ok, then it's very hard to discover what is
going on.
Not fixing the problem but healing the symptoms...
If you are sure that there will never be a drive
on D:, then you can put my tool ReMount into the
startup.
remount d: z:

If there is a drive on D: and Z: is availlable
then it will change the drive letter, otherwise
it does nothing:
