Hi, for the longest time I have had 3 cd devices. An external dvd burner
x:, an internal dvd reader y: and an internal cd burner z:.

Now that z: changes to i: on reboot despite repeated re-assignment under
disk management.
The only thing I did was plug in a pny flash drive and assign that m:

All other assignments stay put, Problem persists when not using flash
drive. I tried to search knowledge base but had a problem describing
the symptoms.

Sounds like the Zone Alarm problem:

Thanks, I completely forget I just installed za, although who would have
guessed, particularly where it only seems to affect one drive out of many.
I'll just wait for an update, no big deal and I'm really getting to like
za.

Dave,

I had this same problem and wrote to Zone Labs for their info. The
problem occurs with their latest versions 6.5.731.000 and v 6.5.722.000.

I went back to v 6.1.744.000 and that SOLVED the problem. I did this
because there really aren't any negatives in using the older version.
For the most part, a firewall that is good should be fine as a firewall.
It doesn't require daily "signature updates" and little, if any changes
are made to the code. Newer versions tend to add "other" features for a
so-called "convenience."

I don't know if this is the case with ZA, but using the 6.1.744 version
works fine AND solves the drive assignments. Others have reported to ZA
that their latest software is doing something funny with the secondary
IDE controller. We'll see if they correct it soon.

I recommend you just get the version that I use.
