If memory serves Quake 3 doesnt have a gamma slider, however most 3rd party graphics drivers do, if you have an ATI card get the latest drivers and it's in there same for nVidia cards
This is a problem with glide games, if you don't have a 3dfx video
card.
There is some kind of reason that the brightness slider does not work
within the games (seemingly a driver issue).
I have been able to circumvent this problem in Quake 1, 2, and 3 by
going
into display properties > color > full screen 3d > up by 3 notches the
gamma, the brightness, the contrast. This is with an ATI Radeon card.
