I am about at the end of my rope with this and ready to completely
reformat-however, before I do that-I'll aks for you nice folks to chime
in.

First issue-trying to uninstall Norton Systemworks 2003 from my
sister's pc-it won't do it from the add/remove programs
section-probably trying to keep viruses from doing just that. When I
try to do it from the install disc it says " Windows Installer
failed-you may be operating in safe mode (not) or contact your system
manufacturer' or some such mess. I tried updating the Windows Installer
file from Microsoft..that didnt help. Any ideas? Symantec wants me to
go in and edit the registry-that seems like a crazy way to uninstall a
program.

Also-the pc (sister's) has a strange behavior (running XP-what else is
new, right?) -when a user logs on (any user not just admin.) Windows
Explorer opens and show's My Docs..you have to X out to get rid of it.
Does it each time, everytime. Weird..any help?

Thanks!

Try uninstalling in Safe Mode, and you may well have to remove it by
deleting the registry entries.

Before you uninstall it, see of you can download AdAwareSE and install
it, then boot to safe mode and run it before you hack Norton out of the
PC to see if it can clean some of the crap that's started your problem.

Once you get it reasonably clean, and Norton uninstalled, then reboot
and run AdAware again, then reinstall NSW, but this time only install
the Antivirus part and make sure that you have Windows XP Firewall
enabled. If she has DSL or Cable, then get her a cheap NAT Router.

To remove NSW get the removal utility:

If any links have been changed by Symantec, please let me know so I can
correct them on the page.

For folder on startup try:
Open either Explorer or MyComputer.
On the Menu bar click Tools > Folder Options > View tab.
Scroll down to "Restore previous folder windows at logon".
Uncheck it, click Apply > Ok > Ok.
