XP and Java

Marianne

I downloaded XP home version and I cannot load Java
applets. I tried to play Yahoo games and it will not
load the page. I was directed to Sun Java where I
downloaded their software, but I still cannot load the
applet page. The same problem exists in ESPN fantasy
draft rooms when I try to load their Java applet. What
can I do?

Do you mean you downloaded SP2,
if so Java may be blocked.
When you load a web page with Java, look for a
message just under the toolbar that says something like
"Java Blocked", there will be an option to allow Java.

I don't know what SP2 stands for. I did not notice a
message. Where would it be located?

I have tried it again and rechecked the setting to be
sure everything is enabled. It still will not load the
page :( Does anyone have any ideas?

The question was meant to clarify what you mean by "downloaded XP home
version." If you downloaded Service Pack 2, then it may be the culprit.
Can you clarify what you mean about downloading XP.

Michael,
I used the site and it says Java not enabled...I go to
Java.com and it says(which is true) that I have
sucessfully downloaded Java. I downlowded a few hours
ago and still haven't been able to get it to run. I set
my browser security level to medium-low and that didn't
help. The box for Java is marked enabled...I don't know
what to do next

Did you just download the file or did you install it or was their an
auto-install?

If it installed, check the first site again to see if it says Java is
enabled. If yes, then check other security software you might have
installed, antivirus, firewall, ad blockers, popup blockers and see if they
have an option to block java and see if that option is enabled, if it is,
turn it off.

If the above site says Java is not installed, when you download the file,
you need to run the installation, usually by double clicking the file once
downloaded to your system.

Greetings --

Find a better use for your time? :-} ..... Sorry, couldn't
resist.

Seriously, though.... It would appear that Yahoo and ESPN are
being slow (by a couple of years) to update their web sites to accept
Sun's version of Java. If that's the case, you'll need to add the
Microsoft version , as well.

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft was not allowed to provide its own Java Virtual
Machine to Windows XP users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the wider website
compatibility of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, one of which is here:
http://www.virtualmachine.tk/.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to visit Windows
Update to apply a needed security patch.

Yahoo works fine with Sun Java in Mozilla-based browsers, which don't
use JVM. I haven't checked ESPN, but have never had a problem with Yahoo.
The poster never explained the "downloaded XP" statement, so this could
all be due to SP2.

I seem to be having the same problem in Internet Explorer, Java DOES NOT
work. I have a second browser call Smart Explorer which Java works with no
problems.

PS: I do have SP2 2158 installed it was downloaded from the MS IT Pro site.

MS produced a Java that extends the language as defined by Sun, so that
it would 'work better' with Windows. This was not included in windows
XP, but was available as a separate download, and included in XP SP1

(There appear to be sites that have taken advantage of this, and will
not work with the Sun one - I think those Yahoo games are an example).

Sun sued MSoft, and the ruling in the case prohibits MS from making
'their' engine available as a download - so it is left out of the
revised SP1a

You can still get a 3805 or 3809 build from some sites that are *not*
MSoft sites - and MSoft is not going to object.
eg 3805 from Http://www.bigblackglasses.com/staff/downloads/msjavx86.exe

Once you have such an older version you can get the 816093 'critical
security update' which is effectively a complete build, 3810
