Java won't work

J

John King

I have installed the latest Java 50.0.6 software.
The tests on the Java site prove that it is working.
However if I try to access a site that uses a Java applet I get a message
saying "Sorry you need a Java-enabled browser for the --crossword.
Java tell me my installation must be OK to get the test to work, but I
cannot get any of their applets to work on websites.
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks J King

What browser are you using?
If IE, what are your security settings on the Internet zone, etc? Have you
tried adding the sites you like to your trusted sites and setting the
security therein to 'low' ?

Some sites will only work with the Microsoft version of Java, the Java
Virtual Machine. Remove Sun's Java, Google for "Java Virtual Machine" and
download the version for XP, then install it and see if it works.

Thank you for your interest.
Temporarily I have set my security levels to low for everything.
In IE, when trying to include my required sites to 'Trusted Sites' it tells
me that they must be prefixed https:// however the sites will not respond to
this.
But i'm still getting "Sorry you need a Java-enabled browser for
the........"
I'm running out of ideas!

Do not lower your Security Zone settings to accommodate Java. Have
you checked to see if the MS Java VM is still installed ? It appears in
the Internet Options, Advanced (TAB). It sounds like the Add-In is
installed, but not properly enabled. Also, have many versions of Sun
Java are installed on your PC (Add/Remove Programs). You should
also check C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files and see if the
Java instances have the Status field shown as "Damaged" and not the
expected "Installed". Finally, do you use a 3rd-Party Firewall that may
have a rule for "Blocking" Java enabled ?

Thank you for your comprehensive reply.
I have restored my Security Zone settings.
MS Java VM is still installed, but 2 out of the 3 Add-in were not enabled -
this I have now done.
In the Add/Remove programs I had 'J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4' and
'J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6' - I removed the Update 4.
In the Downloaded Program Files, I had 'Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0' 3
times but all with 'Installed' beside them. I have deleted two instances.
I rely on the XP firewall capabilities but I do have Norton Systemworks
installed but I don't think this has any effect.
The bad news is that with all your efforts it still comes up with the same
'Sorry you need a Java-enabled browser for the........"

Microsoft withdrew it's version of Java a couple of years ago after
losing a lawsuit to Sun. MS's Java, by this time, is seriously
obsolete, any website that depends on it is doing itself and its
patrons a huge disservice.

I deleted my Java installation but on their site I was only offered 'Windows
version' which I think is what I had in the first place. I have now
reinstalled Java 1.5.0-06 but needless to say it still doesn't work.
I cannot believe that everybody has the same difficulty as I or Java would
be a dead duck!
Java themselves are of no help, they say that if their 'test applet' works
(which it does)then the problem is not theirs!

Sun will only offer their version, which is why I recommended a Google
search for "Java Virtual Machine" so you can download it and test it out.

http://java-virtual-machine.net/download.html

If the site is not private, let us know the URL so we can look at it.

I have installed the latest Java 50.0.6 software.
The tests on the Java site prove that it is working.
However if I try to access a site that uses a Java applet I get a
message saying "Sorry you need a Java-enabled browser for the
--crossword. Java tell me my installation must be OK to get the
test to work, but I
cannot get any of their applets to work on websites.
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks J King

What browser are you using?
If IE, what are your security settings on the Internet zone, etc?
Have you tried adding the sites you like to your trusted sites and
setting the security therein to 'low' ?

John,

Did you ever get the site to work properly?

I am just using the XP firewall, nothing else.
I have Norton Systemworks Premier installed but I did go through the
procedure of uninstalling and trying, but the results were the same.
My expertise fails me with this sentence of yours "Also, have you used the
Sun Java applet in Control Panel to purge/delete all the Jar cache & other
associated files?"
I clicked on the Control panel "Java" entry and got the Java Control Panel
but feel unsure what to delete.
Although I have Spybot installed and use it regularly, I did run Trend
Micro but as yet there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

What Security software (AV,Firewall) do you use ? I've worked a
handful of these "Java's There, but the browsers can't load/use it"
issues. Also, have you used the Sun Java applet in Control Panel to
purge/delete all the Jar cache & other associated files ? Just as a
double-check, I'd run Trend-Micro's online test.

privileges.

I uninstalled the version I had and then went back to the Java site and
re installed the windows version which is the 1.5.0./6 it appears to be
the only one suitable for me.
Needless to say the Java test works a dream but sites requiring Java
still reject me.
I cannot believe that everybody has these problems otherwise Sun would
go out of business.
Frustrating isn't it.

John,

You do not mention if you tried my suggestions.

"Some sites will only work with the Microsoft version of Java, the Java
Virtual Machine. Remove Sun's Java, Google for "Java Virtual Machine"
and download the version for XP, then install it and see if it works."

Thank you for your comprehensive reply.
I have restored my Security Zone settings.
MS Java VM is still installed, but 2 out of the 3 Add-in were not
enabled - this I have now done.
In the Add/Remove programs I had 'J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update
4' and 'J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6' - I removed the Update
4.
In the Downloaded Program Files, I had 'Java Runtime Environment
1.5.0' 3 times but all with 'Installed' beside them. I have deleted
two instances.
I rely on the XP firewall capabilities but I do have Norton
Systemworks installed but I don't think this has any effect.
The bad news is that with all your efforts it still comes up with the
same 'Sorry you need a Java-enabled browser for the........"

John King

Do not lower your Security Zone settings to accommodate Java. Have
you checked to see if the MS Java VM is still installed ? It appears
in
the Internet Options, Advanced (TAB). It sounds like the Add-In is
installed, but not properly enabled. Also, have many versions of Sun
Java are installed on your PC (Add/Remove Programs). You should
also check C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files and see if the
Java instances have the Status field shown as "Damaged" and not the
expected "Installed". Finally, do you use a 3rd-Party Firewall that
may
have a rule for "Blocking" Java enabled ?

Thank you for your interest.
Temporarily I have set my security levels to low for everything.
In IE, when trying to include my required sites to 'Trusted Sites'
it tells me that they must be prefixed https:// however the sites
will not respond to this.
But i'm still getting "Sorry you need a Java-enabled browser for
the........"
