I'm in a quandry. I have XP Home, and SP 2 installed. I have not been able
to open IE for several weeks. I used Foxfire for internet for awhile, but
anytime I open a link in my email program - which is Earthlink - I get the IE
error, and the email program also shuts down.

Opening IE itself brings the "IE has encountered an error and must shut down".
Linking gets the same error. I have opted to sent Microsoft a report many
times, with no solution offered in return.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

Checking for spy/malware is a good first step. Crash reports are
anonymous data collection. The links provided indicate you can't expect
a response.

Going to the IE newsgroups is a good second step.

got to start then RUN then type in :
SFC /Scannow (remembet the space in between)

it will scan for bad system files
May ask you to provide your windows XP CD

this should solve your problem

Thanks for your response, Mike.

Your question, "The IE error" is ...?
The answer, "IE has encountered an error and must shut down".
Same error as when I directly open (attempt to open) IE from its icon. The
Earthlink mail program also shuts down. Why IE would close another program
is also baffling.

I do have a good anti-spy/adware program with Earthlink, and I am deleting
files regularly that the program finds. The crash reports have produced
answers occasionally when in programs. I get a report that a driver needs
updating or similar advice - usually with a MS report linked.

I will follow your suggestions and see if the situation improves.
thanks again.

On several occasions I've seen where IE got corrupted and the only way to get
it back 100% was a full reload of the OS.
On machines where this wasn't an option (user didn't have backup CDs for
full reload-not restore which doesn't help) they used Firefox which plenty of
folks like including myself. Try Thunderbird as your email program and import
the email setting or check your providor's instrcutions on what the POP or
STMP settings are.

Another item to check is Firefox your default browser? In Firefox Tools make
sure the option is checked. That way IE shouldn't try to load.

If you want to verify your IE setting download the latest TweakIU package
from Microsoft.com Downloads and it will guide you through each setting of
"factory" vs "what your PC is set at". The TweakIU and Microsoft isn't the
same as the ones on downlaod.com or CNET.
