XP and filecheck....

Hi!

My laptop is getting unstable. When I try to open the submeny "Control
Panel" on my Start-menu, I get an errormessage like this;

An eception (C0000005) occured during DllEntryPoint or DllMain in
module: c.WINDOWS\System\IUniCalibrator.cpl

Upon clicking on the "OK"-button the system resets the desktop, and I have
to reactivate my active desktop, and the taskbar is redrawn with a lot of
icons missing near the clock.

My microphone has stopped working too.
I use WinXP Home Norwegian edition, on a Toshiba 2.8GHz laptop

I know there is a command which I can run, which checks all vital files in
the OS kernel, and restore those to their original state.

I wonder if it was like CSF, "Check System Files" or something...

Does anyboby on this NG know what I'm talking about, and who is willing to
help?

I believe what you are looking for is Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow".
Note that there is a space between "sfc" and "/scannow". Have your XP
cd ready. However, I don't recognize "IUniCalibrator" and neither does
Google. Have you done a virus scan with a current av using updated
definitions? What changed between the time things worked and the time
they didn't? From your description (and because it is a laptop), you
may be having hardware issues, such as overheating. Does the laptop
feel very hot to you? Post back for more help.

"Don't Panic!"

That's the command I was looking for.
I did run it, but the error remains.
What changed things to worse I really don't know, but I guess something
happened when I installed WinMX.
I have reinstalled my mouse driver now, and it works fine.

I don't think it's overheating, it's only three months old, and it don't
feel hot, my wife's brand new Acer 1.6 Centrino feels much hotter, but this
may be something you can't feel....

I guess I have to perform a clean install.
I do a lot of installing and uninstalling of programs, and that I know is
certain to make a system be unstable.

Besides a typo sneaked in to my text, the word is UniCalibrator, not
IUniCalibrator. Sorry about that.
Still a Google search came up with one Norwegian based page;
http://www.win-xp.no/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=45541#ggviewer-offsite-nav-4075904

But they only discussed reformat and clean install.

They talked about an installed program being the cause of this error
message, and that it might be connected to the Exchange Server or it could
be a JET database.

Well, since you are doing p2p file-swapping, scan with a current
antivirus and also with spyware removal tools.

Done that.
Latest updated version of Grisofts AVG.
And latest updated version og both Adaware and Spybot

It's strange I cant fins anything concrete about this on the net?
Isn't this an errormessage created by explorer.exe or is it not?

Try the laptop mftr. tech support. Basically, without being able to see
the laptop, I can't think of anything else. There are so many different
combinations of hardware and software in pc's, and so many error
messages. Maybe yours will strike a chord with someone, but it isn't
familiar to me.

Good luck,

There was a file in windows/system32 named UniCalibrator.cpl which in turn
did something with the colors for the drivers to the screen.

Anyway, I removed the cascading Control Panel menu, and then deleted the
file in question.
Than I reinstated the cascading menu, and now it all works fine.

Glad you got it all sorted out. Thanks for letting us know the solution.
