Windows XP Home SP2 on a new Toshiba Laptop will not maintain my desktop settings. If
I select Classic View, when I reboot it is the Windows XP Design with the heavy blue
system tray etc. Would this be a Windows issue?
Thanks

Try this registry fix. Instructions are atop the page.

Line 30. Windows XP Doesn't Save User Settings

I have also been having the same problems with a new Toshiba laptop
and came across this thread trying to find a solution. The Windows
theme and sound settings are reset frequently on my computer. I tried
the fix in the post above, but it didn't stop the problem. The
settings seem to be reset randomly. Some times they will stay as I
have set them for several shutdowns and restarts, but then may be
reset two or three times in a row. I've tried keeping track of when
it happens to try to figure out if other programs or perhaps running
off of the battery versus AC power is causing the problems. So far I
haven't found a pattern or cause for it. Any other suggestions or
advice from someone who solved a similar problem would be appreciated

You could always do a Google Groups search through their archived posts:

http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=XP+remember+"display+settings"&qt_s=Search
http://groups.google.com/groups/search?q=XP+"save+display+settings"&qt_s=Search

Thanks Joe/Elmo, but I had already tried a search on my own. The
results I got in both mine and your search were either unrelated
topics, or I contained suggestions I had already tried that didn't
work.

Back to the original problem, I someone else found a solution on
another site that worked for me. Hopefully this will also work for
Tim T. Follow the instructions below.

See http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs2.htm

Here is some of what he says on that page
{with MY settings in squiggly-brackets. Remember, I am trying to get
XP to remember my preferred Theme (Windows Classic).}:

Question: Why does Windows XP Style change to Windows Classic Style?
....
Other checkpoints:

1. Right click the My Computer icon/Properties/Advanced/Performance/
Settings. Verify that: Use visual styles on windows and buttons is
checked.
{My solution: Not checked}

2. Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View. User Common Tasks in
Folders.
{My solution: I have a checkmark for "Display simple folder view in
Explorer's Folders list"}

3. Right click the Desktop/Properties/Appearance. Windows and Buttons
choose: Windows XP style.
{My solution: On the "Themes" tab, I selected my slightly modified-
then-saved Windows Classic Theme}

4. Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Scroll down to Themes and
verify that the service is started.
{My solution: This is the important modification - I right-clicked
"Themes" in the list, selected 'Properties' from the pop-up menu, and
on the "General" tab, changed Startup Type from "Automatic" to
"Disabled"
....
------------------------------------------------------------

Now, after approx 7 hours of My Life researching and experimentation,
my desktop PC is actually able to remember my preferred theme!
Amazing, so simple :-P

Funny, I had seen that Kelly tweak before. Glad you got it going.
