XP and EXCEL files

When opening Excel files without Excel running, the OS is opening Word to open the .xls files. Any ideas?

Check the file associations.

open the .xls files. Any ideas?

Right click on a *.xls file and select Open With. If the recommended
program is not Excel, change it to Excel.
