Here's the rub: I can't find the original XP Pro CD I
installed from. Am I up a creek on this install if it
ever goes flaky (as I'm beginning to suspect I am), or is
there a way to recall the license nuber from this machine
without having my CD?

Get the free Everest Home edition from
http://www.lavalys.com/index.php?page=product&view=1
which is an excellent general System Info tool, and its Operating System
- Operating System page will tell you the one used

You will need a CD of the same sort (Pro Full) if you need to do a
reinstall, but there are channels at Microsoft to supply a replacement
provided you can quote the Key or more likely Product ID (as shown at
Control Panel - System. Or you can borrow one; the license resides in
the Key and what happens is that Setup on the CD puts it through a
calculation to check it to is valid for that series of CDs

That's OK. There seems to be some server trouble around, that is (I
think) leaving out some posts, so that follow-ups to them are left
'orphaned'
