XP activation

Hi,
I used a retail version of XP Upgrade to upgrade my 98SE to XP Home. I
activated it. Can I use the same Upgrade to change my son's 98SE to XP? I
have him on a network using a cable modem and router. Or must I buy another
Upgrade specifically for him?
Thanks,
jll

Each installation of Windows XP, installed
on different computers, requires its own unique license.

Please read your End-User License Agreement by going
to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter. Then
click on "End-User License Agreement".

In order to upgrade your son's computer, you'll have to
purchase a conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" of
Windows XP.

I thought as much. If I did it anyway, would the M$ storm troopers batter
down my door? (Just kidding!) Really, what would happen?
Thanks,

Hi,

You simply would not be allowed to activate the second installation over the
internet.

Not unless you *uninstall* from your machine first. Read the EULA -. ONE
licence = ONE installation on ONE PC.

Not true - I activated the same copy of XP on two machines over the internet
usaing the same product key within FIVE days installing on each machine.
(Only as a stopgap I hasten to add as I had a faulty Recovery CD on the one
machine which has subsequently been replaced!)

Check out e-bay. You may be able to purchase Windows XP Pro that does
not require activation.

Hi Gordon,
I take it the replacement recovery CD overwrote the original Product Key
when you used it on the second machine? How does that work?
Thanks,
jll

Good old eBay . . . </s>

You can buy all sorts of counterfeit software, stolen, etc. for a fraction
of what a legitimate Reseller has to pay for it.

Sometimes you get what you pay for! Sometimes you may run into problems and
find that the mfr won't support you because what you have is NOT what you
are legally entitled to.

Not legitimately you won't..
And that would probably be stolen and may not work at all.
Not a good idea to suggest buying stolen goods of any kind.
And a worse idea to spend $ on something you may not be able to use or get
your $ back.

Hi Wolfman,
I got my XP Home upgrade on sale for $76.00 at Best Buy. How much better can
I do on eBay? And why XP Pro? Is it that much better?
Thanks,
jll

The recovery CD is basically an image of the HDD as it left the factory - it
replaces EVERYTHING!
