I'll give a second account a shot later. In the meantime I ran
Bootlogxp and got this (partial list). Is there anything I can do about
the long times? Thanks.

You have some serious issues with hardware drivers.
For example, AMDK8.SYS which is the driver for an AMD 64 bit CPU chip.
Did you perhaps migrate your Windows XP to a different computer or
change the motherboard without doing a Repair Install?
If not then go to your computer/motherboard manufacturer's web site
and download the latest drivers for your exact model number and
install these. That should help with at least some of these startup
delays.
Good luck
