boot problem

Going thru normal proceedure for shut dow of XP Pro last nite,
the last I saw after "saving your setting" was
"Windows is shutting down". It was taking a VERY long time, so I left
it and went to bed. This A.M. the same "Windows is shutting down
screen" was still there.
I physically shut it down and on reboot it got as far as
"Loading our personal settings", the screen went black and STAYED black.
I did a physical restart again and did F8 into "safe mode" and the same
persistent black screen again.

The only way I can boot now is in F8 and use the "Last good
configuration setting" and pray. That's how I'm able post this.

It seems that it starts normally and never completes the boot cycle.

Desperate!!!

Perhaps you should boot to recovery console, run "chkdsk" , and check your
boot with "bootcfg".
You might also try running "Fixboot" from same console.
