Beppe

i,
i have a big problem with my Windows XP Home-sp1 (clean install), running on
a Intel P4/2ghz.

After about 10-20 minutes of running, some applications doesn't run
correctly, and after it generates an error in event viewer "application
hang" (event id 1001-1002).
Some examples of "hang" applications are :
Winrar :
double click on a rar file --> application hang

Winzip :
double click on a zip file --> open winzip --> i try to expand the zip
file --> i try to choose a folder --> application hang

Excel 2000 :
double click on a xls file --> Application hang

Mp3 files with Winamp :
double click on a mp3 file --> Runs correctly
but :
if i try to run a mp3 from anoter application e.g. Winmx, my XP-Home try to
open Winamp and hang !

Ms-Word 2000 :
open word
file-->open (in "Documents" folder). When i try to navigate in another
folder of "mycomputer" the program cannot find anyone diskdrives anh hang !

Internet Explorer : does not start !

When i try to make CTRL-ALT-CANC windows xp is not responding !

After this "crash test" i reboot the machine and all of this applications
runs correctly.

After 10-20 minutes this "hang" problem returns and all of the application
mentioned returns to "hang".

I have made the following operations :

- i try to repair the Xin/xp with original install disk
- i try sfc /scannow

without any changes.

I have not installed Office XP or Norton antivirus program.

I have check spyware with AdAware but it's all clean.

I have check viruses with Kaspersky antivirus (with updated database), but
it's all clean.

The main applications that i have installed are :

Mozilla Firefox 0.8 (i try to remove it but problems are the same...)
Office 2000
Adobe Pagemaker - Photoshop - Acrobat professional

Have you any suggestion for me, to repair this problem ?
Thanks in advance.

(ps. excuse me for my bad english !)

Your English is just fine, better than many English-speaking people.
You've done all the software troubleshooting. It sounds to me like you
have hardware issues, possibly overheating or bad RAM. Here are generic
hardware troubleshooting steps:

1) open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing); 2) test
the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test run
for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately; 3) test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from
the mftr.; 4) the power supply may be going bad or be inadequate for
the devices you have in the system; 5) test the motherboard with
something like TuffTest from www.tufftest.com. Testing hardware
failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with known-good
parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are uncomfortable
opening your computer, take the machine to a good local computer repair
shop (not a CompUSA or Best Buy type of store).

Good luck,

Malke

Dear Malke,
yesterday i made the first test with memtest86 but it's ok.
I made also other software tests and i discovered that my problems begin
when i connected to internet !
I have an ADSL connection with a ethernet modem (Ericcson hm220dp) with a
single computer, and i use the dialup (lan connection) of Win/Xp Home to
autenticate my connection with my local italian provider.
The amazing discover is that all the "hang" problems begin when i make the
first connection to the net.

I usually use this internet softwares :
Windows XP dialup (to autenticate)
Fortè Agent 2.0 (for news and mail)
Kerio Personal Firewall
Winmx (p2p client)
GetRight (download manager)
Mozilla Firefox 0.8 (for the web)

Have you any suggestion for me to solve this problem ?
Thank you very much in advance and best regards !!!

Hello Beppe - Well, if you insist on running p2p software like WinMX,
you are going to get spyware, viruses, and other malware. I'm not
scolding you or making a judgement about you, but this is just the way
it is. When you do p2p, you are basically in bed with 50,000 other
users, and not in a good way. So if you make the decision to run that
sort of thing, then you have to do it on a sacrificial machine. Scan
with a current (post-2002 version) antivirus using updated definitions
- that last requirement is key. If the definitions are outdated, the av
is useless. Scan for spyware, because you've picked something up. I
always suggest the free programs Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.security.kolla.de and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to
update these programs before running them. Again, the updating is key.
It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode.
Even if you've run these programs, run them again. You might also add
CWShredder and HijackThis which you can get from www.spywareinfo.com.
Check out the forums on that site - they are fantastically helpful.
Also, HijackThis requires some thought in running it, so read about it
there.

Good luck,

Malke
