Data:
os: XP Home, with latest critical updates but not full SP2
isp: verizon dsl
firewalls: linksys befs41 router, xp home native, trend
micro's internet security 2004
av: trend micro internet security 2004, latest updates
also: spywareblaster, ad-aware se, spybot s&d, HOSTS file
(127.0.0.1 format), CWSshredder, StartPage Guard,
HijackThis, MBSA 2.1, qfecheck, AnalogX's
ScriptDefender. All with latest updates.

Starting about one or two weeks ago, I noticed that my
computer was acting differently: when I'd awaken it from
sleep and immediately attempt to check e-mail via Eudora,
or attempt to browse via IE, or attempt to update Trend-
Micro's AV sw, they would fail. The failure was
unreproducible; sometimes there was no problem. The
EventLog doesn't seem to provide any clues. If I must
point to any one event (no new software was knowingly
installed), the abberant behavior seems to roughly
coincide with MS's announcement of SP2's incipient
release (and a concommitant change in the appearance of
the Window's Update page). The only diff I noticed was
that TaskManager showed an additional process: wuauclt,
which seems not to take up any CPU usage (0%), and goes
away after a few moments. A search for wuauclt & wuauclt1
revealed that it exists in apparently legitimate
directories.

I do not understand why wuauclt now shows up in the
Taskmanager.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated...
