Fix it utilities 6.0 using Trend Micro engine/different update pattern?

Hi,

Since recently I use Fix-it utils 6.0 from VCOM. They also have a AV
which seem to use the Trend Micro engine and updates.
The thing is as i updated this morning the pattern version at FX-utils
was 2.781.00.

On the other hand i went to the TM site and there the last update virus
pattern version was 2.783.00.....!
At first i thought there had to be NEW updates so I tried again the
update fucction within FX-utils 6.0. However this told me that there
were NO MORE Updates availeble and that i allready was using the latest
virus definitions.

What is this?? Fix-it has different numbers or maybe are behind with
updating??
Anyway another thing i noticed was the quite large update file: 7.3 MB!!

Anyone experience with this AV program??

regards,

Jacob

It sounds like FixIt VCOM is behind in updating as lpt783.zip is certainly available. The
question is how does that application deternine when or if updates are available for
download.

Yes, the 7.3MB is the size of the Trend Micro ZIP file. Expect it to get larger, not
smaller, as a function of time as new signatures are added. Other AV vendor files are
similarly sized depending upon compressibility of the distribution file.

I tried and downloaded the newer files from the TM site.
I unpacked the zip file in the anti-virus directory in the Fix-it
folder. However the anti-virus seems to work, but in the overview it
doesn't write the virus pattern version!

On the Vcom site itself i could not find any update files to download
manualy.

I wonder isn't it maybe more usefull to have an AV-program that has the
latest virus definitions then (let's say) 3-5 days old?
Overal i am NOT impressed by Vcom regarding the AV option with the Trend
Micro engine. Also the spyware definitions seem to be outdated:-(
The rest of the program is working outstanding.

Time to shift back To Kasperski (with much smaller updates!) or NOD32!!
Even the free Avast! or the (free)Antivir program would be more welcome
with current updates then this.....;-)

The Antivirus program is from Trend Micro. This is a program that I
considered when I built my Athlon 64 machine a few months ago. I never
could get them to tell me if the Updates were only those files that I
need to augment what I already had, or if the Update was the whole
Antivirus signature file. Well, yesterday I clicked on Update and I had
to download a 7MB Antivirus file, which took over half an hour. This is
unacceptable on a rural dialup, or any dialup for that matter. Since I
am very happy with eTrust EZ Antivirus from Computer Associates, which
provides daily updates of normally around 200KB, I will not use the
Trend Micro program that came with VCOM Fix-it Utilities 6.

The next day, I got a flag that more Updates were available. Actually,
the flag did not say what program had updates, I just assumed it was
VCOM because I had not seen that particular flag but once before. So, I
clicked on EasyUpdate. It took three minutes on a dialup connection to
reach the server. Once again, there was an Antivirus definition of over
7MB, obviously the entire file from scratch, not an augmentation to what
I had already downloaded earlier. Estimated download time was 33
minutes! You gotta be kidding.

I clicked Cancel and then unchecked the box to notify me of Updates and
checked the box for Manual Update. In other words, I will search for
Updates (only for the Fix-it Utilities) every few weeks or months. My
flirtation with the Antivirus and Spyware functions of this package are
over! Of all the Antivirus programs I have used or have ever seen on a
computer, the version of Trend Micro used by VCOM is the ONLY one I know
of that does not update antivirus definitions with only the newer defs,
not the whole virus definition file! This is inexcusable. No wonder
Trend Micro never gave me a straight answer months back when I queried
them about how their virus defs update worked.

Well any self respecting AV program which flings out updates of 7.3 MB
isn't realy of this time.
Like I said: it's time to shift back to kasperski/NOD32 or some other
good (free) AV programs like Avast! or Antivir.

The rest of the programs of Fit-IT Utilities 6.0 is doing a great job.
And personaly I think they are at least as good as Norton System
works...or whatever.
Only a pity of the outdated "updates" and large files which come with
the AV part:-(
VCOM realy needs to look into this one fast!

Okay, David H. Lipman says 7MB is typical from a lot of anti-virus vendors.
You say it is not. Which is correct?

every time my old KAV 4.5 updated...the file wasn't bigger as 400-500
Kb...NOD32 even has smaller update files!!
Personaly I think that if an AV program is updating the DEFINITIONS with
such a large file there is something wrong.
And it is.....!!

THEY ARE NOT BRINGING IN JUST THE NEW AV updates....they (VCOM ie. Trend
Micro in this case) brings out the whole AV pattern definitions!!!

btw....also Avast! only has updates between 100-400 KB each.

Avast, on my Win2K PC, has updates of between 2KB and maybe 15KB. And
daily or more often as well.

Even McAfee will did differential updating. Yet, the full DAT is ~6MB. Since a third party
program is using a Trend Engine I understand why it is downloading a full Trend Pattern File
and not a differential update. Just like using Trend Sysclean. I get a similar size when I
update the Sophos 32bit and 16bit command line scanners.
