wuauclt.exe constant popup

S

I have justcompleted a reformat and clean install of xpsp2 and immedeatly
recieved the constant popup regarding windows update"wuauclt.exe has
encountered a problem and has to close blah blah" and this is constant. since
then I have searched microsoft, googled and run numerous reg repairs using
ccleaner and dial a fix which were recommended by web site (reputable ones)
the only change to the factory ghost disk is to remove an "ETRUST" trial
version and replace it with" avast "anti virus. I have completly removed
etrust through add/remove and then deleted leftover file in the Registry. I
have tried to manually install up dates but no go.I have tried to install
anew "windows update agent 30-x86.exe but cannot as it reports that it's
already installed, however, when I search, i vcan't find it. I have tried to
use /WU force in dos cmd prompt to run it manually but it returns a "cannot
find specified path" so how can I reinstall, repair, fix or solve this issue
as all I can do right now is disable windows updates, also worth noting that
I reinstalled twice as the first time I recieved this error I thought it
might have been a glitch. the internet access is through a billion hub (this
one via a lan cable)and windows firewall is all I have as a fire wall on this
machine.
any ideas??? cos I'm about over it.!

Hi
Delete all folders/files in this directories like Download, selfUpdate..etc
then Reboot your machine and run Disk clean up.

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution = Delete all subfolders in the right
pane/window.

Then try this Reg file. Copy and Save the code below in a Notepad as Fix.reg
on your desktop then double click the reg to execute it and click [Yes].

net stop cryptsvc
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 Msxml.dll
regsvr32 Msxml2.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 inetcomm.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 cryptsvc.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
net start cryptsvc

Also Turn any firewall and Defender for the Update (please turn ON after the
update either success or failure) Then Reboot your machine and try the
Updates.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

If the above did't help try to search your machine for wuauclt.exe and copy
it from dlcache to this location:

C:\Windows\System32

Reboot your machine and try the updates. Does it help.

Scan this machine and make sure nothing lurking in the background blocking
the updates from taking place.
HTH,
