Hello there,
Weird problem with Windows Update v5. While installing WinXP SP2 earlier
today the system crashed and would freeze on startup at the "Welcome"
screen. So, had to use the recovery function and get her back to SP1a. I
then reinstalled SP2 from disc (original install was via WU) and all went
well.
Problem is, Windows Update now hangs at the "Checking for newest versions of
software."Here's what I think happened: when I recovered the system back to
1a it nuked the v5 update files but didn't deregister them, to the PC still
thinks it's running v5 when it's only got the files for v4. My questions
are:
1. Can I force a re-download of the v5 update software?
2. Can I just use v4 somehow? When I type the v4 URL into IE it just
forwards it to the v5 site.
TIA, this is driving me nutso.
