wrt54g router not connecting

Hi. I am extremely new to this networking thing, and am pulling my hair out.

I got the wrt54g router so I could get VoiP. Well, I can't get the router
to work. The Internet (I'm on cable) works fine when connected directly, but
I can't get the computer to see the router and I've followed the tutorial
several times and checked and re-checked the connections. I can't access the
192.168.1.1 address to see if it's configured right (not sure I'd know,
anyway!) and resetting does nothing. I'm on XP sp2. I have no idea if I
gave enough information for anyone to help, but if I didn't, please feel free
to ask!

I'm at a total loss. :-(

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion, Sooner Al. I did look there first, but didn't see
anything specific to my problem.

What I'm trying to figure out is how to do this when some of the features
seem to be automatic in XP, while others aren't (I think). I don't know if I
was supposed to set up a network first (which didn't work), or if I was
supposed to do nothing and let the router take care of everything (which
didn't work). I think it has less to do w/the make/model of the router than
it does w/user error/lack of understanding/information as to how this is
supposed to be done.

Thanks.
