trying to upgrade/re-install xp pro from my recovery disk. Get a message that
the wrong volume is in the drive. I think this means my product key doesn't
match my recovery disk. Before I attempt a complete re-install I'd like a
second opinion, since the tech support didn't know what they mean. Thanks in
advance,
Mickey

Since the product key is not on the CD, no that can't possibly be what
it means.

Exactly how are you trying to do this? Please be specific? Booting
from the CD? Running from within Windows? What steps did you take?

Why are you doing this? What are you planning to accomplish?

Aecovery disk will wipe out the drive and install new...
so be sure to back up your data first

I installed a fax/modem card in my computer. When I tried to install the XP
fax service component I got an error message "unable to copy fx*.* files" I
can see them in the

C:\windows\1386 directory, but the setup wizard cannot. Tech support
suggested trying to get the files from my recovery disk. Again I could see
them but the wizard cannot.

Next, tech support suggested repairing windows, this option was not
available to me when booting with the recovery disk. However on this disk is
a menu which is-
install windows /upgrade (which apparently should also repair damaged files)
leaving other applications and data intact or Install windows / new. A
complete new install.

When trying to upgrade, and entering the product key, I get the message the
wrong volume is in the drive.
