Writing on desktop shortcuts all highlighted?????

(Windows XP) HI! shortcuts on desktop have descriptions. These
descriptions (writing) is highighted in a coloured box. I would love to get
rid of the highlighted boxes as my screen is just too BUSY. PLEASE HELP me
get it back to norm!! i have tried everywhere in APPEARANCES AND THEMES, BUT
TO NO AVAIL.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these coloured boxes over the writing??

try this

start>run and type

sysdm.cpl

then "Advance">then select Performance Settings>Scroll down till you see
"Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop". Make sure this checked
off.

If this is checked off, right-click on desktop, then go to "Arrange by
Icons">then uncheck "Lock items on Desktop"
