writing files to dvd

Any suggestions?
I have just bought a laptop pc with dvd re-writer
I am simply trying to copy files as back up to dvd-r but
keep getting windows error message saying disk can no
longer be written to, have tried several dvd-r's and none
work, its like windows wont recognise the disk is there.
Writing to cd is fine. new to this am I missing something
 
Please contact the maker of the DVD bruning software you are using. Windows
XP will not burn DVD's.
 
Make sure the writer can write on DVD-R. i know mine
won't. I can only write to DVD+R.
