Although WinRar "expires" after 40 days I think you'll find that
it still works - it just takes longer to load and gives you a
message asking you to get a licensed version. You should still
be able to use the free version after expiry.

There are free programs that archive files but they don't
necessarily do all formats. Many of these archive formats are
proprietary and they also change the algorithms and (archive
format) so that you need the latest version to use recent
archives.

There's a good program I used for the *.z format recently but I
can't remember the name of it! and I doubt that it handles all
formats. Don't worry - keep on using WinRar - if something goes
wrong and for some reason it stops working get back to us here
and I'm sure a solution can be sorted.

Thankyou to all who replied so promptly.
I'll let WinRar run and see how I go.
Plenty of alternatives posted here too.

Or just download ARJ (available on your friendly abandonware sites) and get
the freeware Windows frontend for it.

If you just want the compression, take a look at DCA. It gives about the
same compression ratio as RAR, but is freeware. It's format is proprietary,
however you can create a SEA (SEA - self extracting archive) with it.
