Hi
i have been having probs with my windows xp for a couple of weeks now - very
vert slow startup at the sign on/log on screen - then screen goes blank blue
for about 2 mins, then all program icons appear on the desktop all at once.
When the taskbar starts to load - again its very slow and the pc freezes for
a couple of seconds and then loads then freezes and so on. Iv noticed that my
mcaffe security keeps being disabled. Iv run a spybot - its found
coolwwwsearch in the reg and removed it. but its still the same. I have tried
a system restore but it says after trying it cannot complete restore. Iv
tried to do a disc check but it scans, completes phases 1 and 2 then tells me
it cant complete it.
I have a report log that says that there is damage to a block on c ??
Initially i would have said virus or spyware issue but a there is a lot of
struggling to load up on startup - and it boots into safe mode ok at normal
speed, so im not sure if its another issue with windows. I would appriciate
any help or suggestions please.

If the problems occur before Windows is loaded - when you immediately
turn the computer on - then you should look to hardware. However, that's
not how I read your post. I read it that the operating system is booted
but it takes a long time to get to the Welcome Screen (or logon box if
you use Classic logon). This could most definitely be caused by
viruses/malware and the fact that things work in Safe Mode confirms that.

Start by really cleaning your computer. What you have done so far is
inadequate.

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to
do all scans in Safe Mode.

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Multi-AV - instructions
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/sicherheit/35905/multi_av_scanning_tool.html
- download site

The site is in German but David's tool is in English so don't let that
worry you. Scroll all the way down to almost the bottom of the page and
you'll see a box titled "Infos Zum Download - Multi-AV Scanning Tool".
You'll see "Download von www pctipp.ch" and the live link to download
Multi_AV.

You can also check to see if there are targeted removal steps for your
malware here:
Bleeping Computer removal how-to's -
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum55.html

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the first link above (not here, please).

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops
are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may
be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. Have all
your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

I think this is an hardware driver problem.Uninstall all newly
installed programs and devices.open MSconfig disable all startup items
and do a diagnostic startup.
