I guess I have the W32 blast worm. I have been getting
the NT authority RPC message. I have some concerns
though. I have gotten this message for a long time, and
didnt think to act on it. I am worried about what could
have been done to my computer. What destruction could
have been caused?

Take a look at www.sarc.com and look up the virus in question. You will get
a lot of info there which should be helpful.
Also, from there is a tool that will remove any trace of the worm.

Hi "Z"
I'm sure I have less knowledge than you about this
virus/worm thing, and I hope you can help me out.
I've been scanning the posts here but can't find an
answer to my worry -- Is the worm same as a virus? I
have been scanning with Norton and so far have got a
clean report. So my worry is I'm not sure if the worm is
escaping the virus scans.
You wrote that you've had the worm for a long time.
Does this mean the worm escaped all the virus scans? And
how does one detect the worm if it is not caught by a
virus scan?

"Bob"

Hey Bob, I had the worm for awhile because I didnt get
any help with the problem, so if you think you have a
virus get some patches from MS and some help, thats
important. The virus is the same as the worm it's just
different names, people use virus and worm
interchangedly. In response to your question I did not
run a virus scan before so no my virus did not escape the
virus scans.

Hi "Z"
I appreciate your response very much, as it makes me
feel a lot safer now. I've been scanning with Norton
regularly and so far, have always got a clean virus
report (thankfully!). That's why everytime my computer
hangs, I wondered lately if the worm is not part of the
Norton protection.
I notice Steve N's comments below, but I'm not too
picky that there's gotta be some differences between
virus and worms.

Best Regards
"Bob"
