I think I have a worm or virus. I thought i might have
the blaster worm but when i ran the fixblast, it did not
show up. I have also a message when online that windows
was shutting down due to NT AUTHORITY. I don't think the
worm is showing up in my task manager, but on the event
viewer, it shows some events by NT AUTHORITY, W32TIME,
and USER32. I also have not been able to uninstall my
norton anti-virus, and install my upgraded edition. It
won't let me open them.
Upon restart or start-up, the computer says it has found
new hardware, but I didn't add any new hardware. What's
going on and how do I fix this?

Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

Lynn;
You are USER32. You are probably Auto logging on. user32.dll = Windows XP
USER API Client DLL
W32TIME is synchronizing your clock. Double-click your clock/click the
Internet Time tab. Is the "Automatically synchronies time with an Internet
time server" checked? Click the Update now button. Note the time and check it
in your Event Viewer.

I'm also showing "WINS client" and "WAN miniport (ATW)
service" in my system services, both by "unknown"
manufacturer. I'm positive I've got something wrong with
my computer because it won't let me go to any
windowsupdate web pages or install any software,
including my anti-vrius stuff.
What do i do?

THANKS!

Lynn;
WAN = Wide Area Network as compared to LAN Local Area Network.
WINS = Windows Internet Naming Service.A program that runs under Windows NT
Server which correlates the host name of a computer on a network with its
physical IP address, thus making it possible to find computers on other
networks. WINS client would be you.

I do know how to use google, but thanks. My computer
won't let me go to the windows update site, and I can't
install anti-virus software. I also cannot install any
updates i have on disk. I was looking for unfamiliar
files because that's what symantec's site said to do if
you had the worm and couldnt update. Thanks for all your
help.

I believe you probably have a virus infection. However, since you aren't
computer-savvy (guessed from you saying you didn't know how to use
Google), the best thing to do is take the machine to a good local
computer repair shop (not Best Buy or CompUSA) and have them fix things
for you. Then buy a beginner's book about XP. Your computing experience
will be happier if you know more.
