Workstation Causing DNS Problems

B

Ben

Hi,

I've noticed several event 53 errors on our DNS server relating to CertSvc
(below). Due to the error message ("DNS name does not exist") I looked at
our DNS, and found that the workstation is creating its own folder!? So we
now have:

Forward Lookup Zones
domain.com
_msdcs
_sites
_tcp
_udp
DomainDnsZones
LAPTOP01 « Folder with workstation name, containing its own
A record (LAPTOP01 192.168.0.50)
ForestDnsZones

I tried deleting the folder, and rebooting the workstation, but every time
it restarts, it recreates the folder & records in DNS. I've checked over the
workstation, initially the DNS Client service was disabled for some reason,
so I enabled & started that. I found that when I went to 'My Computer' >
'Properties' > 'Computer Name' tab, the 'Full computer name' was
LAPTOP01.LAPTOP01.domain.com, so I went to 'Change' > 'More' and the
'Primary DNS Suffix' was LAPTOP01.domain.com (No idea why!), so I changed
the suffix to just domain.com and rebooted, however, the moment the
workstation rebooted, it recreated the LAPTOP01 folder in DNS again. I tried
deleting the folder, and running IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS & IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS
on the workstation, but again the folder is recreated!

What else can the problem be? I'm now stumped as to how to fix this problem!
I can't see anywhere else in TCP/IP properties, or 'My Computer' where the
DNS name is incorrect!

Any help much appreciated

Ben

Hi Lanwench,

I did try a post there first, but only had one novice reply, which wasn't
very helpful.

I suggest that you then try reposting, and rephrase your question. It really
is the most relevant newsgroup.
