I have Works 7 installed on 2 computers on a wired home network. Can I
share Works files - specifically the calendar and contact files? I would
like to open a common calendar and contact list from either computer.
They're both running XP SP2. Thanks for your help.

Hi Bill,
What you can do share a folder on one of the machines. Then on the other
computer you should be able to see that folder on the other computer. Be sure
to specify that you want other computers to be able to edit the files.

Hope this helps,

Marcus

Marcus,

Thank you for your reply. To be more specific, I don't know how to point
the application (calendar, address book, etc.) to the shared file. In other
words, if a calendar program is running on computer A and using a calendar
file located on computer A, how do I tell a calendar program running on
computer B to use that same shared file located on computer A. Hope that
makes sense. Thanks again for your help.

I just checked my Works 7 and in the calander you probably have to export
your calander to a file and then with the other computer, import to calander.
This is the only way I can simpy do it I think.

Sorry I counldn't help you more,

Marcus

If I understand what you want correctly, you want a shared
calendar/emailing app on a central server. I don't believe you can do
that with Works. Normally you would set up an Exchange Server for this,
but if you are just trying to do this in a home situation or very small
business, this would definitely be overkill. What about using a
web-based calendar instead?

Can you do this? Maybe. I'm not familiar with Works, but I trust it
wasn't made with this sort of collaboration in mind. What if two
users open the same file at the same time, and try to put in
appointments on the calendar for the same time? Maybe they are trying
to edit the appointment while you are deleting it. See the problems?

To do what you want effectively, you need to be running some sort of
collaboration program on a Server. Exchange is Microsoft's version,
but there are other players in this game as well. Works is really not
cut out for this.
