Working USB device suddenly becomes Unknown Device??

This is driving me crazy!! I hope someone can help.

For some reason the card reader (SOYO internal 6 in1) I've installed in my
shuttle stops working. All of a sudden I'll boot my machine and instead of
seeing a mass storage line appear under USB controllers in the device
manager, it changes to Unknown Device!!?? The only (sort of) remedy I've
found is to unplug the lead from the jumper on the mobo and then switch it
on again and then plug it back in again, XP then redetects it and away I go
untill the next time!. This is completely unacceptable.

I've tried redetecting for hardware changes and driver settings when this
happens but they all report nothing is wrong! Besides the driver for the
reader is built in to XP so I've never needed to install drivers anyway?

Why would XP all of a sudden stop detecting the device as a reader (and
instead calls it an unknown device when its been working perfectly up till
then??

I really hope someone here can help!

p.s. the reader itself worked flawlesly in my previous machine so I reckon
it isnt that.

USB seems a little flaky to me. That's the only conclusion I can come
to after experiencing similar oddities as you just have. In my case,
a perfectly good epson usb printer, working for a year, suddenly gets
a code 10 in device manager with a yellow exclamation mark.

In my case, I uninstalled the USB printing hub and used redect
hardware changes, it gets picked up, and a reboot makes it available
and everything is back to normal.
