Hi everyone. As of yesterday, when I open Windows Mail I am unable to send
or receive e-mails. I get no error messages upon startup and all seems
fine. It tells me I'm working online. I'm connected to the Internet and my
web browsers are functioning. But it doesn't automatically attempt to
send/receive on startup and when I try to do so manually nothing happens. I
don't get error messages - just nothing. When i click on the "Working
Online" area it switches to Offline, and then when I click again it goes gray
and I get a Not Responding message and I have to close down. Navigating
through folders and existing messages is problem-free. Any thoughts?

Click on Tools, then Accounts, then your email account, then Properties.
If there is no check mark in the box before Include this account when
receiving mail or synchronizing, click on this box and then Apply. Click
on OK and then Close.

Click on Tools, then Options, then Send. If there is no check mark in the
box before Send messages immediately, click on this box and then
Apply. Click on OK.

If this doesn't help, which if any antivirus programs are you using?

None, at the moment. Bought my Vista laptop about a month ago. Norton
wants to install but I'm not letting it. Planning to put in ISS or Avast,
but as of now no program.

Robert,

Both of my accounts are set up to receive.

Just tried to send myself a test message. When I click on New Message it
brings one up but when I try to type into the TO filed or type text into the
body it freezes and I get the same Not Responding message and I have to close
down. Still no problems reading existing mail and I just did an export of
all existing messages and folders without incident.

Avast works well if you do a custom install and tell it to leave out
the part that scans email.

Click on Tools, then Accounts, then your email account, then Properties.

Click on OK and then Close.

Click on Tools, then Options. If there is no check mark in the box before
Send and receive messages at startup, click on this box and then Apply.
Click on Send. If there is no check mark in the box before Send
messages immediately, click on this box and then Apply. Click on OK.

It still sounds like some third party security program is interfering with
Windows Mail. If you are not able to resolve this problem, I suggest
you upgrade to the newer Windows Live Mail program, which seems
to be more trouble-free:
