Working on old frontpage site, lost navigation bar

D

David Allen

I'm revising an old web page for a client.
I forget what version I used originally but it was last revised in 2003
I am using frontpage 2003 now.
I've downloaded the entire site including all the _borders, _derived, etc...
folders.
When I open the index.htm with a web browser off my local hard drive then it
navigation bar works.
As soon as I open the site with frontpage the navigation bar stops working.

If the site is hosted on a server with the FP extensions, then you need to open it directly in FP
and publish back to your PC.

If the site is not hosted on a server with the FP extensions, then you were correct to download via
FTP, but you will have to re-do the navigation structure and apply shared borders, etc. unless you
have the a local copy of the original site.

Yahoo is doing the hostings I have no idea if they fp extensions

But why can't I just download the site via ftp and open it? That does not
make
any sense. I did the site in FP and used ftp to upload it. Nothing has
changed.
It works correctly locally off the C drive. Its just that as soon as I open
it in FP
that it gets screwed up.

I created the site using a template.
How do I re-do the navigation structure and how do I apply shared borders?

When you publish or upload a site to server that doesn't have the FP extensions, there is no FP
configuration info for the web available to FP. So you will have recreate the any of the following
if used:

1. shared borders
2. re-apply your theme (if available in your current FP version)
3. re-create the site navigation structure.

When I originally made the site I uploaded every file and folder that
frontpage made.
Again it looks proper when its launched from my local hard drive.
Why does frontpage screwup the links?

The hidden FP files are not used on servers that do not have the FP extensions, and FP will never
publish them between servers.

When you upload a site to server that doesn't have the FP extensions, FP merges shared borders,
themes, navigation into each page, that is why the site works in your browser.

I uploaded the files with a FTP program.
I never used FP to upload the web site.

Anyways luckly I included the theme on the web site.
I downloaded it, installed it and then had to reconstruct the navigation of
the site
and reapply the theme to each page.
That got the site to look proper locally.
I'm about ready to upload the site again.

So briefly explain what I should be uploading when I FTP upload a site to a
web server?

Thomas A. Rowe

1. Use FP to publish, and then only if FP's FTP mode doesn't work, use a 3rd Party FTP application.

2. The hidden FP folders/files are never uploaded or published between servers, even if the server
has the FP extensions.
