Working around Task Scheduler / Sysprep bug?

Due to a longstanding bug that Microsoft apparently is not going to fix, the
Task Scheduler is broken by Sysprep, so that tasks with SYSTEM level
authentication don't run on the imaged computers:

Scheduled tasks may not start if you used a System Preparation image to
install Windows XP or Windows 2000

Due to the fact that the Sysprep bug is now nearly five years old, I sort of
get the idea that Microsoft is never going to fix this problem with the XP
Task Scheduler.

So what is the alternative? Is there a free non-Microsoft replacement
available for the XP Task Scheduler, to allow scheduling of SYSTEM tasks and
which can survive the Sysprep process?
