Workgrouping XP and 2KPro

Vince

I have a friend with an older ( 3 years ) IBM Thinkpad
and a new ( 1 year) Dell (c) PC. He's having trouble
workgrouping the 2. The laptop won't connect to the
internet once SP4 is installed so it had to be
uninstalled. Does anyone know if SP4 is required to
successfully workgroup 2K Pro with XP Pro?

Greetings --

No, Win2K's SP4 isn't necessary for networking with WinXP, but it
is strongly recommended for all of the other things it fixes.

On the WinXP PC, create local user account(s), with password(s),
that have the desired access privileges to the desired shares. Log on
to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will be able to
access the designated shares, provided your network is configured
properly.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:
