Workgroup Not Accessible

Guest

Alright, I've been at this for a long time now. I did a repair install of
Windows XP with SP2 included on my machine. After it completed successfully,
I noticed I was no longer on my network. I couldn't see any other computers
on my workgroup, nor their shared folders, and I can't see my own shared
folders in Network Neighborhood. The other 3 computers were still fine and
could network with each other no problem but they couldn't see me or my
shared files. However, I can go to Run-> \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and access the
shared folders of the workgroup computers. They can't access mine, however,
with that method.

I came here looking for anything at all that could help. The Computer
Browser was turned on, NetBIOS was turned on, Windows Firewall is On now and
File and Printer Sharing is allowed in Exceptions. It was off for a while
but out of desperation, i turned it on to try and get the network to work
again.

Summary: I can't access my workgroup. I can't see any workgroup computers
from Network Neighborhood. The other computers can't see me. The other
computers can still network with each other just fine. I can access the
other computers' shared folders by using Run-> \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. They can't
access mine using that method.

I need help please.

Matt,

This will be a lot easier if you can provide some diagnostics from the other
computers. From 2 other computers (that you say work OK), provide the same
information please.

This may be a NodeType issue. BUT, MORE IMPORTANTLY: you are sharing
folders on public IPs; you do NOT have adequate protection; and this is a
very bad idea.

Here's the ipconfig for Computer 1.

I hope that helps.

OK, Matt. Good start.

You've got at least 2 domains (are they workgroups? and the difference here
could be significant).
# FEARINHELL
# KOZMIC

What domain / workgroup is SHITDEMON a member of?

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify computer
names and ip addresses).

1. Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight
then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V)
into Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
2. Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root
folder "C:\".
3. Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
4. Wait patiently.
5. When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and
ensure that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A
Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

OK, Matt.

I am having a similar problem, small home office network with five XP
machines and one running Linux (my son); my X41 notebook first couldn't
connect via its wireless adapter and in the process of trouble shooting that,
I lost the ethernet connection as well. I've tried everything Windows
trouble shooters suggest so many times I've lost track. I CAN see this
machine from the others that are working; including its shared files if I use
its IP address //168.192.0.x; this isolated machine can also see others using
their ip addresses. But there is no way this isolated machine can "explore"
using computer names.

Any thoughts?

Had to include the CDiag for Koz in a second post.

<SNIP>

OK, Matt. Your original problem report was on the money.

ShitDemon has the problem. It can't resolve names, can't see the rest of its
workgroup (FearInHell), can't net view any other computers, nor be net viewed by
other computers. The other computer in its same workgroup can see server
advertisements from the FearInHell master browser, including ShitDemon.

Shitdemon has either a personal firewall problem, or an LSP / Winsock problem.
From the extensiveness and symmetry of its lackings, I'd guess it's a personal
firewall. If Windows Firewall on ShitDemon is properly setup, and File and
Printer Sharing exception is enabled, then you have an additional personal
firewall there. What antivirus product is protecting it?

I'm not sure if Windows Firewall is set up correctly. I presume it is.
Does resetting it to defaults give it a proper set up?

For an anti-virus, I use AVG 7.1. Sorry this took so long to reply to,
your service was down for a while.

Matt,

Look at your enumerated symptoms. This is a classical example of a
misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall.

Windows Firewall supposedly configures itself properly when setup, but I
wouldn't bet on it. Look back in other threads in this forum - you would not be
the first with your problem.

I note from reading the Grisoft website that AVG V7.1 comes with a connection to
the AVG Firewall. Better check for that too.

If no help yet, get Autoruns (free), enumerate your LSP / Winsock, and post the
