Are you going through a hub or router? If not, you need a "crossover"
Ethernet cable to do direct connections between PCs. Otherwise you get
nothing.

Is there a user account on the Win2k machine that is identical to one on the
XP Pro box, same user name and password? If not, add one. Make sure that the
permissions on any shared resources allow this account access.

Note, it's not necessary for the account to be logged on to the other
machine for this to work. It just has to be present. I hope that makes
sense.

Did you turn off simple file sharing on the XP machine? If you did then the
same rule applies here, log on to XP with an accout that's identical to one
on the 2K machine.

Can you ping one machine from the other? Start -> Run -> cmd.exe -> ping
LAPTOP or ping DESKTOP (just substitute the correct names).

What if anything is showing up in My Network Places?

Are any error messages being displayed when you attempt to connect? If so,
post them here.

Have you ruled out any problems with network cards or your crossover cable?
Start -> Run -> ping localhost. At least find out if your cards are OK.

Are your IP settings OK? Start -> Run -> ipconfig /all. See if the numbers
check out OK.

It's usually a good idea to reboot a machine whenever you make changes that
could effect network access. Also, whenever you change settings that are
related to user accounts they won't take effect until that user logs off and
back on.

"File and Print sharing for Micorsoft Networks" installed on both machines?

When you say that you can ping both machines, is that with their names or IP
addresses? If you can't ping by computer name, then you may have disabled
Netbios over TCP/IP.

Not really. It seems that you're doing everything right. The only other
avenue that I might look into is opening a command prompt window and seeing
if the info you get when you run ipconfig /all, net view and/or net use is
OK.

Have any changes been made to the local group policy on either machines?

Also, have you tried to access resources by going to Start -> Run ->
\\LAPTOP\Share and/or \\Desktop\Share?

Good luck

Before you go digging into group policies:

Can you post what shows up when you run ipconfig/all on both machines? Just
cut and past the relevant info, IP address, Subnet mask, Default Gateway,
DNS servers.

On the XP machine, is there anything entered under the "Alternate
Configuration" page of your Network Connecton properties?

Also, if you haven't already, post your original question in a Windows 2000
networking newsgroup.

Have you tried shutting down each machine and then starting up the laptop
first then the desktop. Check connectivity, then try the opposite approach.

Now for group policy, Start -> Run -> cmd.
Now enter "gpresult.exe /v >C:\gp.txt" (there's a space before and after /v,
also lose the quotes).
Now go to Start -> Run -> c:\gp.txt. Look for anything entered under the
sections titles "Resultant Set of Policies for". All you should see is a lot
of "N/A".

If you haven't guessed yet, this ones got me stumped. When I've run into
situations like this I've found it's usually a good time to step back from
the problem and start all over again. Disconnect the computers, delete any
IP entries you made, change the workgroup name to something different.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help

You're fine there.

Something I forgot to ask. What exactly have you shared on the XP machine
and how is it shared?
Have you tried Run -> \\Laptop\Sharename.

And another obvious question I should have asked:
What, if any, security related progams are you running?
Any Norton or McAfee suites installled?
Antivirus? Internet Security?

Glad to hear that you've got your network set up. What finally
solved the problem?

Here are a couple of web sites that may help you set up a shared
internet connection.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics

Start with the Microsoft article.

Keep in mind that setting up ICS will change some of your TCP/IP
settings. Seeing as how it took a while to get your LAN up and
running, I'd suggest writing down the TCP/IP settings on both
machines in case you have to reset them later.
