workgroup and domain naming problems

I have two similar problems. I have two networks, one a workgroup and one is
a domain. I need to replace a PC on both networks. However, the last time I
did this...I had a minor error. The new PC's will have the same computer
names that the old ones do. So when I take the old PC's off of their
respective networks and replace them with the new ones...I get an error
saying that the computer name already exists on the network. Usually, I have
to name it something else and then after a few days, it allows me to change
it to the name I want. Why does it do this, and how can I replace the old
PC's with new ones and use the same name, on both the workgroup network and
on a domain?? Thanks.

Do you have an internal DNS or WINS? If yes, you may need to remove the old records from DNS or WINS. Also check the AD and make sure you don't have the same computer account.

I have no internal WINS server. The only DNS server I have is my domain
controller for AD. I have discovered that if I simply remove the old PC from
AD and then re-add for the new one, all is ok. So that problem is solved.
Now, just need to figure out how to do this on my other network, which is a
workgroup and not a domain. Thanks so far.
