How can someone work remotely? doesn't someone have to be on the other end

No. The computer merely needs to be set to accept remote requests. And, of
course, you nee to proper log-on to access teh remoe machine.

The idea of working remotely is so that you could be sitting anywhere in the
world (and as long as there are available connections) and be accessing that
remote pc using the computer that you are currently logged onto.
