Very frequently "Work Offline/Try Again message" pops up
while I'm in the Internet Explorer, and yet I'm on a
cable connection with other internet items up and
running. Is there a reason for this or a setting I need
to modify to stop this, or could it be a firewall setting?
Yes, it could be a firewall setting, but it could also be a faulty cable
modem, bad wiring, or spyware/viruses. Here are generic troubleshooting
steps to ensure your machine is clean: 1) scan with current antivirus
using updated definitions - note that "current" means a version not
older than 2002; 2) remove spyware with tools such as Spybot S&D
(
www.security.kolla.de) and/or Ad-aware (
www.lavasoftusa.com) - note
that it is a good idea to do virus and spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3)
delete temporary and Temporary Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary
services/programs from running at startup (see
www.blackviper.com for a
listing of services). Also, look in Event Viewer for clues. If you know
your machine is clean and still have problems, call your cable
company's tech support and have them provide some support. You may need
a new cable modem.
