"Work Offline" and "Try Again" box

Long story, I'll try to be brief. I was able to reclaim my missing Privacy
Tab on the Internet Options Box and reinsert IE6 into the add-remove app by
reinstalling IE6 + SP1 from a disk I have (and then going to WU to get
caught up again).

My connection to the internet is dial up, manual. All previous user
preferences seemed to have been saved except for this: the way IE has set me
up on this reinstall, when I'm not connected, if, for instance, I try and
delete a cookie via Windows Explorer, I get a box telling me I'm not
connected, with the choices "Work Offline" and "Try Again".

Since I'm manual dial-up, I'm aware of that I'm offline and don't need to be
presented with these options. This didn't happen previously, but I can't
figure out how to get rid of the automatic appearance of the box. TIA

Uh oh. New problem arising out of the above. The WU consisted of 4 items.
The biggest one at 1.9mb out of about 3.0mb is KB837009. So far tonight I've
downloaded it "successfully" twice - WU still does not recognize that it's
already installed when it scans the OS, although if you go to the WU history
it says that it's been successfully downloaded and installed twice tonight.
Also this number, 837009, is not listed in Add-Remove or Help-About, either
prefaced by KB or Q. Am I caught up or not? If so, any way to get WU's right
hand to know what the left hand is doing, so that the WU OS scan will
recognize it?

Hi Roger :)

You failed to mention the version of Windows you are using, so I can only
offer general suggestions:

For #1.

MSIE - Work Offline / Try Again (#357)
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq/5.+Troubleshooting#357

Check your proxy settings. See if the information here might help:

Disable Automatic Proxy configuration
http://charterpipelinentx.net/disableproxy.htm

also...

Click on Internet Options in Control Panel > go to the "Connections" "tab" >
check > "Dial whenever a connection is not present" > Apply > OK out.
Close Control Panel.
When leaving your Internet connection running for lengthy periods without
activity, some Internet service providers (ISP's) drop connections if there
is no activity on the account.

and.....

Check the information here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers.htm#dial_up
What is the Dial on Demand Feature?
http://www.carricksolutions.com/am.htm#3

For #2. Try the following and see if it helps:

Windows Update says the update is still needed
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/needagain.htm
Windows Update Site Lists Updates That You Already Installed
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319109
Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

If this does not work, then check for scumware on your system.

Hope this helps :)

FWIW: Solved second problem by removing reinstall and then re-reinstalling
IE6 from the disk. There is a point in the installation where you are
presented eith an "Advanced Tab". Clicking tab reveals, among other things a
checkbox which says something to the effect of do not associate IE6 witrh
any programs files or folders (this is from memory, so no doubt it's a
little different). Checking that seems to have solved it.

(by the way, I noted the operating system, WIN98 SE, in an earlier post on
this thread)

Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem. Good job!

Sorry I missed the Windows version......lack of sleep and too many tax forms
to read... :)

Thank you for posting back and letting us know what worked for you, and for
the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem. :)
